Aconcagua trip summary
by Alex Van Steen

Aconcagua has become one of my favorite destinations. I began guiding here many years ago, and still vividly recall my first impressions. There was certainly an untouched feeling to the high desert Vacas Valley approach, complete with its wild river fordings and even wilder muleteers! The upper mountain, from this eastern flank, was seen as “the climber’s route,” distinguished from the normal “mule route.” Indeed, I distinctly remember how wonderfully isolated our Vacas and Relinchos Valley approach was as compared to the Horcones Valley (Ruta Normal). I recall viewing condors and foxes, incredible fields of snow pinnacles, beautiful frozen waterfalls, the amazing geological layering that defied description, and the amazing – and frightening – viento blanco – the “white wind” that screamed its warning to us as we approached the higher reaches of the mountain.

These days the fords are replaced by bridges, the muleteers are a bit less cowboy, and you hear stories about people’s grandmothers trying to unicycle off the top. Well, OK, not exactly. Aconcagua remains a wild and beautiful adventure. It is a great destination if you’d like to take your mountaineering to a new level. It’s still cold and windy; the viento blanco still builds, the condors still soar, and its still the highest mountain in the world outside of the Himalaya and Karakoram!

If you are ready to join a mountaineering guide service that excels in offering a truly heightened customer experience, then we’d love to have you join us on this amazing peak.
