Ecuador Expeditions

Cotopaxi (19,340')

Ecuador trip summary by Alex Van Steen

Ecuador is one of those rare places where you can get lost in the culture and climbing. I have visited the country 18 times, and each time I’ve discovered a new “favorite” place or climb. I always enjoy the mountains in Ecuador; there’s a lot of diversity both in the climbing and the surrounding landscape. And I love exploring the towns, meeting the people, and slowing down the pace of my life. My wife and I spent 3 weeks in Ecuador a few years ago, just touring around, exploring and enjoying. It’s a country full of opportunity.

We offer two programs to Ecuador. One is an 11-day adventure to climb both Cayambe (18,997’) and Cotopaxi (19,348’). The other is a nine-day trip to climb Cotopaxi only. Both programs begin in Quito, and after a day of sight seeing in colonial "Old Town,” we get into the mountains. The climbing is challenging due to the altitude and glaciation, but very do-able – a great next step if you’ve got a little bit of mountaineering under your belt. Both expeditions are a great combination of mountain climbing and sightseeing. I hope you’ll join us.

"It was a great balance between a great climbing trip and a cultural experience.  It was a treat to experience Quito and life in the rural areas; the lodging choices were unlike any I had experienced before; and all of our guides and other climbers were fun, interesting people. … Thanks for a great adventure.”
