Kilimanjaro Expeditions

Kilimanjaro trip summary
by Peter Whittaker

If you haven’t been to East Africa, you should go! I’ve been to the summit of Kilimanjaro 13 times and can’t wait to go back. I have guided over a hundred people on Kilimanjaro and asked them which is harder, Rainier or Kilimanjaro. Their answer – a split – half say Kili, half Rainier.

Walking amongst the giants

Giant Lobilia at 13,000'

Here’s why – Kili is easier because it’s a trek; it’s not technical – no ropes, no crampons, no ice axes or glaciers. And, of huge significance, you have a porter to help carry the majority of your gear. Why do 50 percent think Kili is harder? Because it’s higher!

Kilimanjaro rises isolated out of the East African savannah and commands attention. When I first saw the mountain, it definitely impacted me. Everything about a Kilimanjaro trip is incredible, and its one reason I’ve returned so many times.

Consider joining Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. on one of our two African adventures: a climb of Kilimanjaro only or Kilimanjaro ascent and safari. Adding a game viewing safari at the end of your climb is a perfect way to reward yourself and transition from the thin air at 19,000 feet to the splendor of African wildlife.

“Meeting quality people and sharing the day-to-day adventures – the process of trusting and acting as a team was impressive at all levels – from head guide to last porter. We all became a positive force to make this trip the best it could be!”
