What does winter in the U.S. mean? It means great climbing on the Mexican Volcanoes!
If you had a great trip on Rainier, and are
serious about taking your mountaineering to a higher level, the
Mexican Volcanoes are the perfect next step. On Pico de Orizaba,
slopes of 30 to 40 degrees make up most of the climbing on our
Jamapa Glacier Don’t underestimate these mountains – physical conditioning and mental stamina required! To climb with us in Mexico, we offer are two options. Choose from our nine-day climb of Ixtaccihuatl and Pico de Orizaba, or our six-day Orizaba Express Ascent. |

Our Mexico's Volcanoes expedition climbs two of North America’s higher peaks. This nine-day trip begins in Mexico City (7,300 feet) on day one and ends in the afternoon of day nine. The nine days include an acclimatization hike on La Malinche (14,636 feet), an overnight stay at Mexico’s Olympic Team’s Training facility, an ascent of the seventh highest peak in North America, Ixtaccihuatl, an ascent of the third highest mountain in North America, Orizaba, and finally an enjoyable evening with our friends, the Grajales family, at the base of Orizaba after the climb.
![]() RMI climbers on the summit ridge of Orizaba! Our shorter, six-day Orizaba Express Ascent is a quick and fun way to grab some big altitude. This adventure mimics our Mexico's Volcanoes expedition but climbs only Orizaba, the higher of the two big peaks. Traveling through Mexico in buses and four-wheel drive vehicles is always a bit of an adventure as well! This is an awesome way to spend a week away from work!
“This trip
was a fantastic experience, both making the summit and traveling
in Mexico. Peter [Anderson] and Jon [Shea] were professional from
start to finish!” |
