Peter Anderson, Mexico Volcanoes Lead Guide, January 12 - 20, 2008

January 20, 2008:
Hi this is Peter. We returned from Tlachichuca to Mexico City this morning to catch our flights. It was a very cold and gray morning in Tlachichuca and we were happy to have had yesterday as our summit day. Our trip is now finished. See you next time.

January 19, 2008 (2:27 p.m. PT):
Hi this is Peter. We are back in Tlachichuca after a nice summit day. We left high camp (15,400') at 4:00 a.m. with a clear sky and light breeze. We reached the summit at 9:00 a.m. As we made our way back to the Piedra Grande hut the clouds rolled in. We are repacking our gear and will descend to the trailhead to meet our driver who will take us to Tlachichuca. We will enjoy an authentic dinner in celebration of our successful climbs. Tomorrow morning we will transfer to Mexico City to catch our return flights.

January 17, 2008 (1:30 p.m. PT):
We’re in Puebla enjoying a well deserved rest day after our successful ascent of Ixta yesterday. The air here is thick and the temperature is 75 degrees! This morning after breakfast we explored the downtown historic district of Puebla, a place rich in history. Now there’s free time for shopping, before meeting for dinner and getting a good nights rest. Tomorrow we’ll drive to the town of Tlachichuca and transfer into 4WD vehicles for the drive to the hut at 14,000’ on Orizaba. Climbing conditions on Orizaba are reported to be very good, so we’re anticipating a successful ascent. Stay tuned…

January 16, 2008 (8:50 a.m. PT):
Hi this is Peter calling from the Ayoloco hut on Ixta.  We have just returned from the summit on a very cold and windy morning.  We awoke at 2:30 a.m. and left the hut at 4 for our summit attempt.  The temperature was in the single digits and the wind was blowing from the west about 40 mph.  Our rest breaks were short and we reached the summit at 7:30 a.m.  The visibility was poor but while on the summit the clouds cleared, the sun poked through and we were able to see Orizaba, Popo and Mexico City.  Our time on top was short due to the cold temps, we have descended back to camp and we are now packing up our gear to meet our driver at La Jolla and transfer to Puebla.  We are looking forward to a hot shower and a relaxing day tomorrow.  We will check in again soon.

Hi this is Peter calling on Sunday evening.  We had a great day today, starting with breakfast at the Hotel Majestic watching the sun come up over the Zocolo and Mexico City.  We left the city around 8:30 and headed to La Malinche.  We went for a nice hike through the woods to 12,300' today, which should help with our acclimatization.  It felt good to work our lungs. We checked in to the cabanas at the base of La Malinche and had a nice dinner - very authentic.  In fact it is probably the best dinner you can find at 10,000' in Mexico City.  Everyone is doing well and looking good on the trail.  We are settling down for the night and looking forward to being out of the city and spending a muy tranquilo night here at La Malinche.

Hola! This is Peter in Mexico.  We just finished a nice dinner with the team and we are all looking forward to the next eight days.  Everyone arrived safely and with their luggage.  Many people were able to spend time exploring the Centro Historico and had a nice afternoon in Mexico City.  We will leave the city after breakfast tomorrow for our first acclimatization hike.  We will check in again soon.
