Whittaker Mountain Camp led by Dave Hahn

Dave Hahn has climbed Mount Rainier over 240 times, led 23 Mount McKinley expeditions with 17 summits, and climbed Antarctica’s Vinson Massif 24 times.  Oh, and did you know he has more successful Mount Everest climbs than any other Western climber?  That’s right.  He has stood on top of Mount Everest eight times.

In addition to being a fantastic climber, Dave is one of America’s top mountain guides.  Patience, empathy, and highly developed listening skills are Dave’s trademark.  As you can imagine, he has more than a few great stories to share!

Dave is leading two Whittaker Mountain Camp programs in 2007.   These programs include hotel accommodations, meals on and off the mountain, select rental items and a private slide show given by Dave.  Don’t miss this great opportunity to climb Mount Rainier with Dave Hahn.

Emmons Glacier Climb with Dave Hahn

Date: TBD
Cost: $TBD

The Emmons-Winthrop Glacier route climbs the northern edge of the largest glacier in the lower 48 states, the Emmons.  Our four-day climb begins with a beautiful 3.3 mile hike through mature forests from White River Campground (4,400 feet) to the Glacier Basin Camp (6,000 feet). We incorporate a mountaineering school the following day, as we make the ascent to Camp Schurman (9,440’), our high camp.  This training will provide self confidence and prepare us for the upper mountain, as we learn the “ropes” of mountaineering: ice axe technique, cramponing, self arrest and rope travel.  The summit bid will commence on Day Three with an ‘alpine start’ (a climbing term for getting up at midnight!).  The “Great Corridor” route on Emmons Glacier may require 12 hours round trip from high camp, where we spend another night.   The last day we’ll re-trace our route down Inter Glacier and back through the forest to meet our shuttle and return to Ashford for a celebration dinner and overnight.

This trip is ideal for climbers who want to further their skill set and take their mountain climbing to the next level. This trip will be conducted expedition style:  sleeping in tents, carrying all our own equipment and moving camp locations.  The route will be on Emmons Glacier.  Previous mountaineering experience is not required, adequate physical fitness is.

Expedition Skills Seminar – Muir with Dave Hahn

Date: TBD
Cost: $TBD

Our Five-day Expedition Skills Seminar – Muir will forge novice climbers into alpinists on Mount Rainier’s uniquely challenging terrain. Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. pioneered these multi-day, on-mountain instructional programs to help prepare climbers for expeditions to other mountains, including Mount McKinley, Aconcagua, Ecuador's Volcanoes, Elbrus, and the Himalaya

We begin with a climb to our hut at Camp Muir at 10,060'. Training each day is conducted on nearby glaciers where Dave and his guide staff will give demonstration and instruction of modern snow and ice/glacier climbing including: self and team ice-axe arrest, cramponing (basic and advanced), belaying, rappelling, roped glacier travel, route finding, anchors, crevasse rescue and technical (high angle) ice climbing. Evenings in the hut are devoted to lectures and group discussion of the days' events. A summit attempt will be made during this mountaineering seminar to put the training to test.  On the final day we will return to Ashford for a celebration dinner and overnight.
