Tanner grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, where he became exposed to the great outdoors through backpacking, kayaking, and rock climbing in Boy Scouts. Rock climbing so enamored him he built a bouldering wall in his garage when he was sixteen. He later left for college to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he experienced extensive canyoneering, and spelunking with some doses of ice climbing, and traditional climbing. He apprenticed for a guide service in Utah teaching rock climbing to young Boy Scouts. He worked as the Teaching Assistant for the Rock Climbing course at BYU. Tanner has been a Spanish teacher and volunteer English-as-a-Second-Language teacher for three years.
