Mount Rainier is one of the premier locations in the world for backcountry skiing. Our world record snowfalls and wide variety of easy, moderate and advanced terrain, make Mt. Rainier a tremendous classroom in which to learn and enjoy the sport of alpine ski touring and ski mountaineering.
The Intro to Alpine Ski Touring course is a five day entry level skills program. The Ski Mountaineering Course is a five day course for those with previous ski touring experience.
Our Intro to Alpine Ski Touring program teaches a wide variety of foundational skills such as tour planning, avalanche awareness, terrain evaluation, route selection, powder skiing techniques and group travel methods. No previous ski touring experience is required for the Intro to Alpine Ski Touring program but participants should be strong intermediate in-bounds skiers.
For ski mountaineers the only thing better than climbing to the top of a favorite mountain is skiing back down. The skills taught on this course are designed to help you do both in a safe manner. The curriculum on this course includes roped travel for skiers, rappelling and belaying, route finding, anchors, crevasse rescue and plenty of skiing.
The Ski Touring course or equivalent experience is required for participation on the Intro to Ski Mountaineering program. Participants will also need to posses solid intermediate to advanced skiing skills - the ability to comfortably ski moderate ungroomed terrain in ski areas - in order to take part in the program.
For skiers who possess the skills to safely enter the backcountry in the winter, the rewards of alpine ski touring and mountaineering can be exceptional.
