Hello everybody, this is Casey Grom checking in again from the Mount Everest Base Camp Trek and Island Peak Climb. We are all currently safely back at base camp here on Island Peak after a successful but long, hard day. It was a pretty tough night. We actually had quite a bit of snow overnight, which made the trail difficult but fine and pretty slick so it was hard going for most folks for the first few hours. Luckily the wind died down and we were able to get three of our climbers to the top of Island Peak. The other three- a couple of them climbed, one stayed in camp to be moral support. The other two, I think they realized it was a little too much for them. It was a big day. It took about eight hours for the team to reach the summit after almost going non-stop with just a few breaks. We are all back at camp, everyone's happy and doing well. We just packed up and we're going to drop down to Chukung... (transmission lost)

Hey everybody. This is Casey Grom checking in again with the RMI Everest Base Camp Trek and Island Peak Climb. Just wanted to let everyone know that all is well. We left Pheriche yesterday and hiked for a few hours. It was up the eastern-most valley in the Khumbu region to a little village called Chukung. Unfortunately, I was not able to get reception where we were staying. No cell service or wifi up there either. We had a great night, great food, and got up this morning to a little dusting of snow on the ground. We had a leisurely breakfast and got everything packed up. And then the team set off this morning around 10 AM. We hiked for about three hours further up the valley to the the base of Island Peak. Our wonderful support staff hiked ahead of us and had our dining tent and even had a hot lunch ready for us. All of our sleeping tents were set up right as we pulled in. We are a little spoiled to say the least. Anyway, the team's doing great. We're just relaxing right now inside the tents and will continue to rest this afternoon. We'll do some training tomorrow and then we're hoping tomorrow night we'll make our summit bid. So that's all for now, hope everyone back home is doing well and we'll check in again soon.

GO DAD!! Just saw the pic of you and Lee at the base of the icefall- maybe that’s been a few days ago? Maybe you’re at the base of Island? Jealous, but so happy for you. Fond memories of a DECADE ago on Pisco- proud of you.
Hello everyone. We have finally made it back to the land of wifi!
It was a wonderful two days at Base Camp and thoroughly enjoyed by all. We bid farewell to everyone there and headed back down the valley to Pheriche. It was an incredibly busy day on the trail with hundreds of porters and yaks heavily burdened with their loads. The weather was pretty nice most of the way which was a treat after yesterday being so windy. We are relaxing in the dinning room here with dozens of climbers where it's actually hot because of the stove fueled by nothing more than dried yak dung.
Enjoying the thick warm air!

Base camp is something I have missed out. The group looks so happy!!!!! Wish You all good luck & thumb’s up to all.
Hope all of You have a refreshing, happy & purposeful trek
Hello Everybody,
This is Casey Grom checking in from Everest Base Camp. Our team actually arrived yesterday after making the summit of Kala Patar. Unfortunately we were not able to get a satellite call to let everyone know that we had safely arrived here. Everyone here is doing fantastic!
We woke up this morning to pretty blustery weather, but our wonderful cook Kumar actually got our hot shower up and running here. So it is nice for everyone to get a nice hot shower and just relax. This afternoon we went for a short walk from out camp down the start of the glacier where the route through the Kumbu Ice Fall starts. That was a nice treat for everybody to get to walk down there and try and get an idea of where the route will go in.
Everyone is doing great; we are currently sitting down for dinner. Our game plan is to head back down to Pheriche and we should have cell service Wi-Fi once we get back down there. We are looking forward to getting back down there and will hopefully send pictures then.
Good Night Everybody!

Hello everyone.
We're still here. Just went through Loboche which is a little short on cell service, wifi and I even had trouble getting my sat phone to work.
The last couple of days have been really nice and strangely it seems to be getting warmer as we get higher. We hiked to Gorak Shep today and wanted to climb up Kala Patar but the evening swirling clouds have us waiting till tomorrow.
We are literarily a stones through from the Khumbu glacier and only about two hours from Mt. Everest Base Camp. Everyone seems to be doing well and we are so excite for Base camp!

Hello everyone.
Today we opted to take an additional rest day here in Pheriche. There's a cold going around and everyone could benefit from a little more acclimatization. Most of us went on a hike to stretch our legs and lungs a bit. It was one of the nicest days in the Khumbu yet, with plenty of sunshine and it was relatively warm today.
After our hike we relaxed once again in the sunroom and played a bit of cribbage. Currently Travis and Sean are winning, but I think their luck is about to change. Hopefully tomorrow we'll hit the trail and head further towards Everest Base Camp.

Clay and I are enjoying your days there vicariously. Photos are amazing, and we are loving having a glimpse of your surroundings. Norm, I’ve been wondering if that K-State cap is keeping your head warm—-or is it just your heart?......:) Stay safe and ENJOY! Judy E.

Hi, Dad! Pete, Lynn and I check in on you each day- great to see the pics. Wishing solid legs and lungs for all. Much love- chris
Hello again from Pheriche.
Today was another well-deserved rest day for the team. After breakfast we contemplated going on a hike but the chilly temperatures and wind outside kept us inside pouring more coffee and relaxing in the nice warm sunroom. Everyone did a little exploring of this small village of about a dozen tea houses, some venturing further than others. At 3:00 pm we walked next door to the HRA (Himalayan Rescue Association) and sat in on a short, but informative, talk about altitude and travel issues. The HRA has small seasonal medical facility based here to treat climbers, trekkers, porters, and Sherpa that need help. It was established by the famous American doctor Peter Hacket in 1974.
Our evening was spent watching the local traffic of porters and yaks pass by loaded with gear for this climbing season. Everyone is still in good spirits and looking forward to tomorrow.

Hello everyone.
We had a wonderful day again here in Nepal. We started with our usual breakfast and coffee at 8:00 and hit the trail around 9:00. Since it's been rather cold here this spring, we haven't wanted to start hiking too early. The team was very fortunate to spot a rare Musk Deer and even saw a few mountain Tarr, which is a type of Himalayan mountain goat.
We made our way to Pangboche where we visited the highest ranking Lama in the Khumbu and received a blessing for safe passage. We continued along the trail passing by the iconic Ama Dablam and slowly came into Pheriche.
The team is doing great and enjoying the amazing scenery every step of the way.

Namaste! (traditional Nepalese greeting)
Today the team left Namche Bazarre and headed further up the Khumbu Valley headed for Everest Base Camp. Shortly after leaving we were greeted with our first view of Everest itself, far off in the distance but clearly standing above all else. We slowly made our way along the trail stopping for pictures and breaks and eventually made our way up to the Tengboche Monastery. We arrived shortly before the monks prayer session and were delighted to sit in and listen to the monks chant, which was quite spiritual for all. We then casually made our way down to our new tea house for the evening where we are currently warming ourselves by the wood burning stove.
All is well!

Greetings from Namche once again.
Today we were greeted with a fresh blanket of snow in town, but only a few inches. We had planned on doing a little hiking to try and catch a glimpse of Everest, but the new snow and cloud cover kept us close to home. So we spent the day drinking coffee, telling stories and doing a little shopping in town. It almost felt like Christmas to be honest!
Everyone is doing great and happily enjoyed the relaxing day here.

P.S.
I'd like to wish my dad a special Happy Birthday! Wish I could throw a snowball at you pops! I love you.
Elizabeth, Nancy and Liz: Guess it feels “real” now and I’ve got goose bumps looking at you in the picture! Gotta say, this is really cool! Have fun and stay warm! XO, Janet
