Mt. McKinley: Beren & Team Summit!

Friday June 19th 11:11 pm PT On Thursday, June 18th, RMI Guide Jake Beren and his June 2nd Mount McKinley Expedition reached the summit!!! After our spectacular day on the roof of this continent, we have to come down. Waking to calm winds and warm(ish) temperatures, we packed up our high camp and bid our snow walls and tent platforms adios. Leaving 17K Camp we cruised the Buttress and made it down to 14K Camp where we dug up a cache and wished the ascending RMI team bon voyage before heading to 11K camp to grab a few winks while the glacier sets up for our walk out to the runway. Amazing how just last week we were camped here with a huge mountain ahead of us filled with so many unknowns. Now we are on the other side of the mountain, grateful for the exploration of an amazing place on planet earth. RMI Guide Jake Beren

Mt. McKinley: Haugen & Team Move into 14K Camp

Thursday June 18th 10:15 pm PT Today was another early wake up, and then we broke camp and retraced our steps back up to 14K Camp. Everyone did great with the move, and the name of the game for the rest of the day was beating the heat around camp, moving in and mentally preparing for a much deserved day of rest tomorrow. The word on the street is blueberry pancakes could be involved. RMI Guide Mike Haugen

Mt. McKinley: Nugent & Team Begin Their Mountain Days

Thursday June 18th 9:30 pm PT Hi everybody! Billy here checking in from Kahiltna Basecamp on a gloriously sunny day. We enjoyed a big breakfast this morning in Talkeetna's Roadhouse and scooted over to the airport to confirm the fact that we'd indeed be flying first thing. A flurry of packing and final weigh-ins preceded the loading of the planes, a group photo, and a smooth departure. The great folks at K2 were really helpful and quickly delivered our team to Basecamp in two simultaneous otter flights. Next thing we knew we were on the ice and having come from summer it felt a bit abrupt but the sun was strong and kept us warm as we got accustomed to our new surroundings. We spent much of the day building our camp, organizing gear and supplies, and rigging sleds for tomorrow's departure up the hill. The team is psyched for a big adventure and ready to work hard. All for now! RMI Guide Billy Nugent

Mt. McKinley: Haugen & Team Full Day of Cache Day

Wednesday June 17th 10:00 pm PT We feel like we are finally on the mountain. We woke up early and left camp around 4:30 to cache some gear at 14,000' Camp. Our attempt to beat the heat worked since we pulled into camp right when the direct sun hit. The rest of the day was spent resting and preparing for the move back up to 14 Camp tomorrow. The boys of el Siete feasted on quesaritos this evening, and are going to sleep with full bellies and full hearts thinking about you all. RMI Guide Mike Haugen

El Siete—every time I see your name I think of the theme song to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Hope things are all good, no bad and ugly. Brian, missing you, and will check the garden and give Perry and Darthy and Mama Cat a hug for you. Keep having fun team!

Mt. McKinley: Beren & Team Move to High Camp

June 17, 2015 9:24 pm PT Good evening from High Camp on Mt. McKinley! Here we are, poised and ready after a smooth move to the high country. The team did great and we are in bed on a beautiful, clear night on the Great One. With any luck we will try our hand at matching ourselves to this stunning mountain if the weather holds tomorrow. Wish us luck! RMI Guide Jake Beren

Mt. McKinley: Jones & Team Return to Civilization

This morning we woke up at 1 am to enjoy our last morning on the glacier. As we left 11,000' camp the sky was a mixture of pink, purple and blues. After our final push we arrived at base camp this morning at 7:30 am. A few hours later after enjoying another spectacular flight, we found ourselves hot in Talkeetna, suddenly aware of how badly we smelled. Everyone spent the afternoon transitioning back into the real world, getting in touch with family and enjoying a shower. Tonight we are looking forward to a celebratory dinner and getting a view of the mountain that we stood atop just a few days ago. Congratulations to the entire team and to Geoff and Eric's team on a successful trip! RMI Guide Lindsay Mann

Mt. McKinley: Upper West Rib Team Descends to 11,000’ Camp

June 16, 2015 11:47 pm It was cold this morning at 17,000' Camp. I mean walking down the ridge in parkas and puffy pants cold. With light winds and a nip in the air we picked our way down the west buttress amongst throngs of other climbers seeking lower elevations. Once we started down the fixed lines the wind died and the solar began cooking us, we walked into 14,000' Camp wishing we had shorts. After a few hours relaxing at our old home we loaded up and continued on to 11 Camp for the night. We had a custom order fry up for dinner, trying to cook all the remaining cheese, meat, tortillas and other heavy items before hitting the sack. Our plan is to wake up in the middle of the night and walk to the airstrip. If all goes as planned we should be back in Talkeetna by mid day. Thanks for following along on our Upper West Rib expedition. RMI Guide Geoff Schellens

Mt. McKinley: Haugen & Team Back Carry and Reorganize Gear at 11,200’ Camp

June 16, 2015 9:32 pm PT We had another early morning today. Instead of moving uphill, we went back to 10,000' to retrieve our cache. All went according to plan and we got back to camp around 8:30 a.m. We did a bit of relaxing and reorganizing of our reunited gear. The sun was out on the glacier, which provided some intense solar radiation that we tried to stay out of. Our plan is to get up early and carry some gear up to our next camp at 14,000' and then return to 11,200' tomorrow afternoon. RMI 7 "El Siete"

Hi Dad (Parky)! We’re closely following your progress and eager to see you safely summit and safely return. Enjoy! We’ll be thinking of you as we enjoy the summer sun and teaching Jane how to swim! Love, Meggie-Moo & Anna-Banana

Hi! Thinking of you, Doug, and hoping you are feeling wonderful in all that sunshine. We see only rain, rain, rain here in Texas. We miss you… and the sun very much. Enjoy the climb and stay strong. All the best to you and the team.

Mt. McKinley: Jones & Team Descend to 11,000’ Camp

June 16, 2015 6:05 pm PT We arose to wind and a bit of ominous clouds at 17,000'. The team efficiently packed our camp to start the long decent back to our families and friends. After 6,000' of decent with a stop to gather our kit stashed at 14,000' and a wonderful quesadilla snack from Jake's team we have landed for some chill time. This is the life! We're at the beach of 11,000' camp soaking our battered feet in the sun soften snow. While puffing our sleeping bags over our tent flies which is conveniently shading us in our cabanas as we get some well deserved rest for the final push to Base Camp early tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed we will fly off to civilization tomorrow! Not that there are no other people to socialize with up here on Denali. Our team has done one heck of an awesome job and we have all created some great friendships! If all keeps going our way our next post will be the last from little Talkeetna, AK with a great evening of celebration! RMI Guide Tyler Jones

Glad to hear the day went so well!!!
David and Mark, I know you were both in great shape but everyone must be exhausted by now….blessings for health and safety to all as you continue to descend. Won’t be long now till you trade your hiking boots for dancing shoes at Chris and Kelsey’s wedding.  Can’t wait to see pictures and hear the stories of this great adventure.

Love and prayers, Mom & Dad Dreher
