Mt. Rainier: June 3rd Update

The Four Day Summit Climbs led by RMI Guides Andres Marin and Geoff Schellens were forced to turn at the traverse to the nose of the cleaver (11,000’) due to unstable snow. The teams performed snow tests which confirmed the snow instability. The weather this morning was clear but windy with gusts of 45 mph as the teams descended back to Camp Muir. The Expedition Skills Seminar – Muir led by RMI Guides JJ Justman and Pete Van Deventer are making their ascent to Camp Muir today to begin their week of training and climbing.

Mt. Rainier: Expedition Skills Seminar Begins

Our team met this morning for our six day Mt. Rainier program. It was the first day of orientation for our Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir. We spent the day ensuring we had all the right equipment and could pack efficiently. In the afternoon we grabbed our harnesses, boots, ice tools and crampons and spent time on the climbing walls at Rainier BaseCamp. Just because we are not on the mountain doesn't mean we can't have fun. Stay tuned as our team ventures on the mountain starting tomorrow! RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Rainier: June 1st Update

The Four Day Summit Climb led by RMI Guide Pete Van Deventer turned at 11,000’ this morning due to avalanche danger. The team returned safely back to Camp Muir and did a bit of training before starting their descent to Paradise. Pete reported high clouds with good visibility below to AltaVista. Sounds like a nice, calm morning at Camp Muir. The Five Day Westminster Summit Climb team led by RMI Guide Linden Mallory will rest and train today around Camp Muir.

Mt. Rainier: Muir Seminar Completes Their Training on the Mountain

The Expedition Skills Seminar – Muir led by Casey Grom and JJ Justman were able to safely climb to the top of Cathedral Gap this morning. They had clear weather, sunshine and no wind. The team had experienced winter-like conditions this week at Camp Muir but had a lot of fun training at 10,000 feet.

Mt. Rainier: Seminar Trains at Camp Muir

The Expedition Skills Seminar team awoke at Muir with sunny skies. We spent the day training outside going over basic climbing skills. Later this afternoon the weather rolled in and we retreated back into the comfort of our bunkhouse. There we continued training where the team safely learned self rescue out of a crevasse. Tonight we will enjoy dinner, lecture on high altitude medicine and tell some tall tales along the way. RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Rainier: Expedition Skills Seminar Reaches Camp Muir

It's winter!!! Maybe I'm a little too excited but we made it to Camp Muir and the entire team is doing great. We endured the wind, rain and snow allowing everyone to learn the number one expedition skill...how to take care of ourselves in foul weather. We are busy sipping hot chocolate and there's a mug with my name on it! RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Rainier: May 25, 2013 - Update

Hi everyone! The team today awoke to conditions that are not ideal to climb in. With all the new snow it just has not settled enough to allow safe climbing. So to enjoy and have a full mountain experience the team went up to Muir Peak to watch the sun rise. It's my favorite part of climbing. The photos simply do not do it justice. We are safe and we are happy and we are still laughing and having fun! RMI Guide JJ Justman & Team
