Mt. Rainier: The Winter Seminar Trains at Camp Muir in Between Winter Storms

The first Expedition Skill Seminar - Winter gathered in Ashford on Sunday for a day of technical training and gear checks. With large packs and a daunting weather forecast the team headed for Paradise as soon as the park gate opened. The team camped above Paradise for their first night out with better than expected weather. After breakfast the following morning the team broke camp and made the ascent to Camp Muir. They have spent the remaining days training at 10,000'. Unfortunately the weather forecast did become accurate and the team experienced a full winter storm on Mt. Rainier which prevented them from climbing higher than Camp Muir. The seminar wraps up tomorrow. We look forward to seeing them at Rainier BaseCamp tomorrow afternoon.

I’m sure the storm was pretty wild because the wind was whipping in Royal City and the pass was getting pretty heavy snow! So the other day I went flying around the mountain to see how much snow she got. She was getting getting wind whipped pretty had and has a pretty good pack. Let me know if you want to see pictures!

Mt. Rainier: September 27th Summit!

The Five Day Summit Climb led by RMI Guides Brent Okita and JJ Justman reached the summit of Mt. Rainier early this morning. Brent reported a beautiful day with clear skies and great climbing. The team will spend some time on the summit enjoying the views before starting their descent. Congratulations to today's team, what a great way to finish the 2015 Mt. Rainier climbing season!

Mt. Rainier: Muir Seminar Wraps Up Week on the Mountain

The final Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir of the 2015 climbing season is wrapping up their final day on Mt. Rainier. Yesterday, the Seminar led by RMI Guides Casey Grom and Billy Nugent made a summit attempt. The teams reached 13,300' before increasing winds and deteriorating weather conditions prompted their descent. Today the teams are descending from Camp Muir to wrap up their week of climbing and training. We look forward to welcoming all of the climbers at Rainier BaseCamp in Ashford this afternoon.

Mt. Rainier: Four Day Summit Climb Turn at Disappointment Cleaver

The Four Day Summit Climbs led by RMI Guides JJ Justman and Nick Hunt were turned around at the top of Disappointment Cleaver this morning due to route conditions. The teams descended to Paradise and will be returning to Rainier BaseCamp this afternoon.

Mt. Rainier: September 20th Update

The Four Day Summit Climb led by RMI Guide Leon Davis reached the top of Disappointment Cleaver on Mt. Rainier before route conditions forced the team to descend. Leon and the team descended back to Camp Muir to rest and pack up. At 8:45 am the team left Camp Muir to begin their descent to Paradise. We look forward to seeing them in Ashford this afternoon.

The Four Day Summit Climb led by RMI Guide Brent Okita and the Five Day Summit Climb led by RMI Guide Ben Liken were unable to reach the summit of Mt. Rainier this morning due to challenging route conditions. The teams called Camp Comfort at 12,700' their high point. The teams will return to Ashford this afternoon.

The Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir, led by Casey Grom and Elias de Andres Martos, reached the summit of Mount Rainier! The guides reported overnight snow of a couple of inches in places but mostly a dusting. The precipitation did stop for their summit bid. They also reported no winds and a cloud deck of 12,000 feet. After spending some time on the top, the teams will begin their descent back to Camp Muir. Congratulations to the team!

Kilimanjaro: Dave Hahn Wraps up the Kilimanjaro Climb & Safari

Our last couple of Safari days were chock full of wildlife, natural beauty and exploring. Tarangire National Park certainly delivered. We saw hundreds of elephants dotting the landscape in family groups of fifteen to twenty. We saw thousands and thousands of zebra and wildebeest. Beautiful and exotic birds were everywhere. We saw several great sleeping lions and we looked in every acacia tree for more big cats. Despite the best efforts of our two dueling sharp-eyed naturalists; Driver Joseph and Climber Chris, we never did see the leopards and cheetahs although we were pretty sure they were watching us. Something left for next safari. None of us will soon forget this one though, and the peaceful night we spent out in Kikoti Camp overlooking Tarangire. We watched a troupe of baboons climb a sheer rock face that final evening for no other reason than to watch the sunset from the top of the rock. We'll keep their example in mind -it is often worth going out of one's way to see the wonders of this planet. Today we are flying back around this gigantic planet toward home. The Four Day Summit Climb teams led by RMI Guides JJ Justman and Pete Van Deventer were unable to reach the summit of Mt. Rainier today due to gusty winds. The teams turned back after reaching the top of Disappointment Cleaver. The teams are descending to Camp Muir and then will continue their to descent to Paradise. We look forward to seeing them at Rainier BaseCamp this afternoon.
