Mt. Rainier: Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir Update

Hi this is Seth. Today we did a dry run for our climb by heading up to Ingraham Flats this morning. The wind was blowing us around a bit but at least the sun was still out. After spending an hour at 'The Flats' we dropped down onto the Cowlitz Glacier for a round of crevasse rescue training. The crevasse that we picked out was great and everyone was brave enough to go down in it. Now we're relaxing for the evening. Tonight we climb! RMI Guide Seth Waterfall

Mt. Rainier: Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir Update

The Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir is on our third day of the program and our second day on the mountain. After a great day of training at Rainier BaseCamp on Sunday, we spent most of the day yesterday getting up to Camp Muir and today we are launching into our training. The weather has been great so far and it's supposed to hold for the week. We're psyched for that. Here's a pic of Senior Guide Lindsay Mann teaching ice axe arrest. We'll check in again soon. Good grief, good going Wally. It looks like you lucked out with the weather.  I was stuck in a snow storm when I tried.

Billy, Nick and Robby, Thanks for making our summit possible. Getting there was my most amazing physical accomplishment and I owe it to your outstanding guidance. I was happy with my strength and endurance, but not my balance and I wasn’t a big fan of the crevices. At first I thought this would be it and it took me a few days to be able to walk easily again, but now I am getting juiced about another challenge. I did write up about a six page summary and am putting together a picture book as wel. Billy, I especially owe my summit to you and really appreciate all you did to keep pushing me and keeping me in one piece. Heart surgery is sure easier than mountaineering. Good luck and thanks. Mt. Rainier: Muir Expedition Skills Seminar Summit!

The Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir stood on top of Mt. Rainier today! RMI Guide Jake Beren called in at noon to say they were starting their descent back to Camp Muir. The team has been based out of the 10,000' high camp all week learning many mountaineering skills to help them achieve their goal of reaching the Mt. Rainier summit. They have also learned more advanced skills to go on to summit bigger peaks, such as Mt. McKinley in Alaska or Mt. Elbrus in Russia. The seminar team will stay on the mountain tonight and descend to Paradise tomorrow. Congratulations to the summit climbers!

Mt. Rainier: September 9th Update

The Mount Rainier Summit Climb led by Pete Van Deventer and Casey Grom were unable to make a summit attempt due to continual lightning last night. After they spend some time on the upper mountain, the teams will descend back to Camp Muir and onto Paradise.

I was originally signed up to make the climb with you guys, but messed my back up and had to cancel. Although I wasn’t with you in person, I was certainly with you in spirit, and watched as you started your climb on Friday. I was one of the volunteers you encountered on your way up. Way to go!
