Mt. Rainier: September 1, 2013

The Four Day Summit Climb led by RMI Guides Tyler Reid and Garrett Stevens made the prudent decision to call 11,200' the team's high point after encountering firm, icy conditions. The team is making its way across the Cowlitz Glacier towards Camp Muir. Once back at Camp Muir, everyone will refuel, rest, and repack for the descent back to Paradise. We look forward to seeing the team back in Ashford early this afternoon.

Mt. Elbrus: Waterfall & Team Hit by a Weather Storm

Well hello again from Camp 1. We're still waiting for some good weather. Last night was a wet, windy and wild one. At about 10pm the side of my tent hit me in the face and woke me up. The next several hours were very blustery. At around 1am the wind died completely and the thunder and lightning started. As the flashes got closer and closer the wind picked up and blew the thunderhead out. Then it started to snow. By the time we started breakfast everything at our elevation had chilled out. It was a hilarious discussion as we related our tent experiences from the night. There was a large cap on Mt. Elbrus but everyone was still game to go for an acclimatization climb. We had to wait for one more snow squall to move through but we made it to 14,420' a new altitude record for some folks. Once we got back to camp it was almost dinner time. We're all done with dinner now and Pete and I have cleaned up the pots and put the stoves away for the night. We're anxiously awaiting tomorrow as there is another storm forecasted but we're hoping it passes us by. We want to climb! RMI Guide Seth Waterfall

The Four Day Summit Climb Led by RMI Guide Dave Hahn reached 11,800’ feet today before encountering firm and icy conditions on the route which forced them to turn around. Dave Hahn reported clear skies and beautiful weather. The team is currently descending from Ingraham Flats and will be back at RMI Basecamp in the early afternoon. Congratulations to today's teams!

Mt. Shuksan: Team Schellens Weathers the Weather

We were hoping for a break in the weather as today was our last chance for a Mt. Shuksan summit bid, instead we got more rain. It's one of the dice we roll when spending time in the mountains. Whatever our weather, Joy and Jim are still laughing and having fun. The rain has been steady all day today and even breakfast had to be made in the vestibule of the tent. We are hoping to see a weather break or two for our hike out tomorrow. RMI Guide Geoff Schellens

Mt. Elbrus: Waterfall & Team Halted by Weather, Retreated to Camp 1

Hello from Camp 1. Today we made a bid to get to high camp but we had to turn around due to thunder storms. We had planned on moving directly up to high camp today and foregoing our scheduled acclimatization day in order to get in front of a storm that is suppose to hit the mountain soon. That wasn't to be however. The team made a great effort and had camp packed up and ready to go before 9am. There was a cloud cap on the mountain and as we started the climb toward Lentz Rocks, the cap dropped and big thunderheads moved in. We made the conservative call to retreat. After rebuilding our camp the thunder picked up and we had some hail and rain. Right now the wind has picked up but the sky has cleared. Even with the lull we're committed to staying in camp for the rest of the day. We have plenty of food and fuel and we'll just see what the weather brings in the next few days. Kilimanjaro: Grom & Team Finish Safari with Not One, But Five Leopard Sightings!

Sorry about the delayed dispatch. We were literally off grid and out in the African bush. It's been one amazing adventure from start to finish and yesterday our last day on safari didn't disappoint. We spent the day in Tarangire National Park which is home to more elephants per square mile than any other place on earth. The elephants were plentiful as were many animals, but the highlight was seeing not one, but five leopards! We first came upon a male who had just killed an ostrich and then just few minutes later we pulled up on a mother and three cubs. Needless to say everyone has enjoyed the trip and are looking forward to getting home and sharing a few photos. Happy 25th birthday Jess! Glad we were all able to share this with you. Our Four Day Summit Climb teams led by RMI Guides Brent Okita and Zeb Blais waited out weather in the early hours of the morning before starting their summit attempt of Mt. Rainier. The teams headed out at 4am and reached Ingraham Flats before encountering firm, icy conditions on the route. They made the decision to enjoy the sunrise at the Flats before heading back down to Camp Muir. Brent and Zeb both commented on the strength and toughness of their teams and were very proud of their achievements on the mountain. Congratulations to today's teams!

Mt. Elbrus: North Side Teams Takes Rest at Camp 1

We're tucked in and doing great at Camp 1 on Mt. Elbrus. Today was a rest day for the team but we still had to pick up some gear from our cache. That got taken care of first thing in the morning and in the afternoon we did a little bit of training out on the glacier. Tomorrow we're planning on putting another food cache in at high camp. Once that is done we just need a couple of days of good weather for a summit bid. Wish us luck! RMI Guide Seth Waterfall

Our Four Day Summit Climb Teams led by RMI Guides JJ Justman and Billy Nugent did not leave Camp Muir last night. High winds, heavy precipitation and low visibility made Camp Muir the high point for the team. The teams enjoyed breakfast and hot coffee this morning and are now en-route to Paradise and will be back at RMI Basecamp early this afternoon. Congratulations to today's teams!

Mt. Shuksan: Schellens & Team Continue Training in the North Cascades

Hi All, Well, Jim, Joy, and I were hoping to climb Shuksan today but the weather once again thwarted our summit attempt. It rained hard all through the night and intermittently this morning. We had a nice breakfast between showers and then hopped back in tents for the better part of the morning. We emerged from our tents around 10:30 to find threatening clouds bearing down on us but as it was not raining at that moment we decided to do some more training. That has become our motto on this seminar, "Let's do some training until it starts raining". After going through crevasse rescue practice and a lunch break the weather kept holding for us so we got in some great ice climbing and fixed line training. During dinner we watched as the clouds appeared to be breaking up and patches of blue sky made their way towards us. Tonight we are all sleeping with fingers crossed that we get our chance to climb tomorrow. That's all for now. Thanks for checking in. RMI Guide Geoff Schellens
