Mt. Rainier- May 26th update

The Four Day Summit Climb led by Tyler Jones and the Five Day Summit Climb led by Pete Van Deventer were forced to turn their climbs at 11,000’ due to limited visibility, high avalanche conditions, and blowing snow. The teams are descending the Muir Snowfield en route to Paradise and will be back in Ashford later this morning.

What an amazing experience.  Sorry you had to turn back, but glad you’re all safe! Can’t wait to hear about the adventure!

Mt. Rainier: May 25, 2013 - Update

Hi everyone! The team today awoke to conditions that are not ideal to climb in. With all the new snow it just has not settled enough to allow safe climbing. So to enjoy and have a full mountain experience the team went up to Muir Peak to watch the sun rise. It's my favorite part of climbing. The photos simply do not do it justice. We are safe and we are happy and we are still laughing and having fun! RMI Guide JJ Justman & Team

Mt. Rainier: Muir Seminar Finishes Their Week on the Mountain

RMI Guides Casey Grom, Adam Knoff and the Expedition Skills Seminar team descended from Camp Muir and arrived at Rainier Basecamp this afternoon. They learned many mountaineering skills at 10,000' during their five days on the mountain and weathered a winter snow storm that dropped three feet of new snow at Camp Muir. Great job to all!

Mt. Rainier: Expedition Skills Seminar Camp Muir Update

The Expedition Skills Seminar – Muir led by Casey Grom and Adam Knoff made the prudent decision to remain at Camp Muir last night. A foot of new snow fell at Camp Muir overnight in addition to 10 inches yesterday. Casey also reports the temperature is hovering around 10 degrees which is keeping everyone busy staying warm. The Seminar is planning to head up to the Ingraham Flats this morning. The team wraps up their training and time at Muir tomorrow.

I did the winter seminar in January with Adam and we were pounded with snow. Didnt get to summit either. Still had a blast! Built a massive snow wall.

Mt. Rainier: May 20th Update

At 7:57 a.m. RMI Guides JJ Justman and Jake Beren were standing on Columbia Crest, the highest point on Mt. Rainier, enjoying the views. There was a gentle 5 mph breeze on the “prettiest day in May that [JJ and Jake] have ever seen.” The teams began their descent about 8:30 and we look forward to seeing them at Rainier Basecamp this afternoon. Congratulations Summit Climbers!

Mt. Rainier: The Ascending Summit Climb Enjoys Blue Skies to Muir

It's quite a bit different than my last climb three days ago. Instead of bitter cold walking up to Camp Muir it was scorching hot!! The team did great and we are rehydrating and getting ready for our summit bid. Stay tuned and see how well our climb goes!! RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Rainier: Muir Seminar Starts Their Week at Rainier Basecamp

RMI Guides Casey Grom and Adam Knoff are leading our first Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir of the 2013 season. Today they are spending the day at Rainier Basecamp preparing for their next five days on Mt. Rainier. Team introductions, gear organizing, and technical training is on their agenda. While the team was testing out their boots on a hike from Basecamp, they ran into Lou Whittaker, the man who started RMI 44 years ago! Some stories were told and photos were taken, then it was back to training. The team is anxious to head up on the mountain tomorrow!
