Gokyo Trek: Hahn & Team fly to Lukla, Trek to Phakding

Things went a little smoother today.  Weather in Kathmandu was improved. There were still some clouds but no rain when we got to the airport at 6 AM.  In no time at all we were getting on board the AStar B3 helicopter bound for Lukla.  It was exciting and exhilarating to get up out of the Kathmandu Valley and to see the Himalayan peaks rising in a line to the North.  They were impossibly big and steep and beautiful with the first rays of the sun finding them.  We flew for about 45 minutes and caught a clear -but brief- glimpse of Mount Everest stabbing into the sky before we landed in the shadows down in Lukla.

Our trek began with a good breakfast.  We set out walking at 9:30 and started downhill.  This part of the valley is all forest and farmland with a big violent river charging through the middle.  There was plenty to see as we followed our Sherpa guides, Dawa, Tenzing and Tsangdu.  Finally we crossed the river a little after noon and pulled into Phakding.  We lunched and then napped away the afternoon at 8600 ft of elevation.  By dinner time the tea house had filled with trekkers recounting their exciting first day on the trail.

Best Regards

RMI Guide Dave Hahn

Aconcagua: Smith & Team Hit the Dusty Trail

The day that seemed like it would never come. The day the team has been training for for months. The day that starts it all, has finally arrived! We checked in with the rangers at the Parque Provincial Aconcagua, took a team photo, and started walking. It definitely felt good to get the legs moving after days of travel and sitting. The desert valley is beautiful. We walked along the riverside following the contours of the valley. After a few breaks and a juicy melon we arrived at Pampa de Lenas where we were greeted with snacks and juice. After our refreshments we put up camp as the wind picked up. The dust swirled around us.  One day in and we are covered in dirt and look as if we have been here longer. With tents up and filled with sleeping bags, we took an afternoon siesta before dinner. Dinner was magnificent! Tomato avocado salad, potatoes, bread, and carne asado. The salt burns the sun-kissed lips but it tastes so good. Bellies full, once again, we head off to bed happy.
Tomorrow brings another day walking in the Vacas Valley.

Buenos noches,
RMI Guide Hannah Smith and team

Mt. Elbrus: Gorum and Team Travel to Cheget

An early start, a few van rides, and a quick flight have landed us in Cheget, at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains. It ends up being a pretty full travel day getting here, but we had enough time to walk around town, sample some local beverages, and gawk at our high elevation surroundings. The pace here is much slower than in Moscow. Tomorrow we’ll hop on a chairlift in town and do some walking around at altitude...should be pretty nice. RMI Guide JM Gorum

Manaslu Expedition: RMI Guide Alex Barber Checks in

Last time I posted I was waiting out bad weather at base camp. Prior to that, I stayed in camp 3 (22,300ft) for four and a half days. However, a good enough window for a no oxygen ascent never appeared. On the 27th I dropped back down to Base camp and took a single day's rest. Today, the 29th, I went from base camp to Camp 3 in a single 8 hour push. I'm positioned again to take advantage of some "reasonably" stable weather. Tomorrow the 30th I hope to make Camp 4 and "fingers crossed" summit the 1st of October. RMI Guide Alex Barber

Mt. Rainier: August 18th Update

The Four Day Summit Climb led by Billy Nugent and The Five Day Summit Climb led by Lindsay Fixmer reach the summit of Mt. Rainier early this morning. RMI Guide Billy Nugent reported beautiful weather and great climbing. The team spend some time on the summit enjoying the views and are now en route back to Camp Muir. RMI Guide Mike Walter and team Checked in from the Expedition Skills Seminar - Kautz. The team had a great day today. We hoisted heavy packs and left the parking lot at Paradise this morning. After about 15 minutes of hiking we left the well beaten path and descended on to the Nisqually Glacier. With crampons on and ice axes in hand, we traversed the Nisqually and gained the Wilson Glacier. The climbing involved some moving over steep rocks with heavy packs, as well as ascending some steep snow slopes. Everyone is doing well and we're nestled in at our camp at 7600' at the Sharkfin. It's a beautiful night, and it's a real treat to leave the crowds behind and have this wild place to ourselves. Congratulations to the our Summit Climb Teams!

Mt. McKinley: Jones & Team Take it to 11K Camp

June 22, 2014 - 12:49 am PT Today we woke to a cold, windy morning at high camp after yesterday's amazing summit. The blowing snow and frigid temperatures kept us tent-bound until mid-day, when the allure of thicker air and warmer temperatures finally got us motivated to pack up and get moving. The first stretch down the buttress was windy and cold, but by the time we reached Washburn's Thumb it was much warmer and calmer. We made quick work of the last stretch to the lines, and then shot down the fixed ropes like it was our job. Soon we were dropping packs back in 14k camp, saying hey to Billy Nugent and Mike Haugen and their respective teams, picking up our cache and getting ready to move further down. Soon enough, we got past Squirrel and Motorcycle Hills, revisiting our old stomping grounds at 11k. We pulled out all the cheese, meat, tortillas, and bagels we had, and commenced to put them all onto the griddle for the annual tradition of the "11,000' Cheese Fry". Basically we just cook all the goodness until folks are full, and then it's off to bed for the early am launch. We're definitely missing the team members who had to head home early, and hope that everyone is warm and dry. Lots of walking left, but we should be at the airstrip tomorrow if all goes according to plan. We'll check back then! Cheers, RMI Guides Garrett Stevens, Tyler Jones, Geoff Schellens and the No Troubles team
