Mt. Rainier: Winter Seminar Experiencing Some Weather and Training at Camp Muir

With 80 mph winds and a blinding snowstorm at Camp Muir, it is a perfect day to conduct training inside. Our bunkhouse serves a cozy atmosphere in the storm allowing us to learn essential expedition skills. If we were in tents all we would be doing is hanging on! Our team is in great spirits and we are waiting out the storm until we venture outside. In the meantime, we're going to continue to sip coffee, lecture and do some rope work. Stay tuned! Mt. Rainier: Winter Seminar On Their Way to Camp Muir

The day begins with blue skies and cold temperatures. We are up and at 'em, with the stoves firing and the team sorting out the most important thing we will do today...breakfast! Our plan is to move up to Camp Muir at 10,000 feet. Will we make it? Stay tuned. RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Rainier: The Winter Seminar Heads Uphill From Paradise

We are in Mount Rainier National Park and on the mountain! The weather has been finicky this past week with a good accumulation of snow. So much snow that we were worried that the park wouldn't have the road to Paradise open. At 11 AM the park opened the gates and we made it up. With all the fresh snow it was slow going but the team trudged on and we are busy making camp...Denali style! We are definitely having the true feel of what the mountains can dish out. It's currently snowing hard and we are working fast on the kitchen and dining tent. I need a hot drink! RMI Guide JJ Justman

Glad to hear that they opened the gates.  Hope you guys are having a great time.  I can’t wait to read more about your week.  Have a great time Denali Style!

Good to hear you two are back on the mountain! I was up there 2 weeks ago, 1st one in the parking lot and on the route! Broke the trail in 3-4 ft. of fresh powder up to Panaroma point! That was alot of work but fun! But we made it to Muir and it was a awesome day! Hope to see you out there this year! Have a great week!

Mt. Rainier: Ski Mountaineering Seminar a Success!

RMI Guides Tyler Reid, Sean Collon and a team of clients spent the last five days learning the art of Ski Mountaineering. The team explored Mount Rainier's incredible winter snowpack and accessible but challenging technical terrain. The team spent the days on the mountain learning and practicing a variety of ski specific technical skills. The trip culminated with an ascent to Camp Muir (10,060') and the team will enjoy an exciting 5,000' ski descent today.

Mt Rainier: Expedition Skills Seminar Update

Today our winter team made it to 11,500 feet on Mt. Rainier! It was tough going at the end. We had thigh deep snow and we decided to make the safe decision to turn around. The weather is beautiful but the conditions are tough. However, that didn't stop the team from having a great day up high. It's a unique feeling being up here in the winter. We are all alone and we are enjoying Rainier's pristine beauty that can only be enjoyed in winter. RMI Guide Jason Thompson is now giving a lecture in snow science and avalanche awareness. That's all for now. RMI Guide JJ Justman

Expedition Skills Seminar - Winter:  Team Gathers at Rainier BaseCamp

RMI's Expedition Skill Seminar - Winter is a go! And the first thing we are doing is the 1st principal of Leave No Trace...plan and prepare. Adam Knoff and I are busy with the team organizing and packing gear, practicing knots and hitches, and teaching various self rescue techniques all in the comfort of RMI BaseCamp in Ashford. We have a decent forecast and our hope is to make a big push up to Camp Muir tomorrow. Will we summit? How high will we get in the frigid snows of Rainier? Stay tuned to find out. One thing is for sure, we will be having fun while going through advanced training for big mountain climbing. RMI Guide JJ Justman
