The Four Day Day Climb August 24 - 27, 2026 led by RMI Guide Joe Hoch and Nick Sinapius were forced to turn around today due to high winds.  The teams left Camp Muir but the winds were just too strong and they retreated safely to Camp Muir. The teams plan to leave Camp Muir around 9:30 am and descend to Paradise.

The Five Day Climb led by RMI Guides Ben Luedtke and George Hedreen were unable to travel above Camp Muir due to stormy weather and low visibility. During their two days on the mountain, the team received a few inches of new snow. Despite the challenging conditions, the climbers made the most of their time on Mount Rainier before descending.

The Four Day Climb August 23 - 26 led by RMI Guides Dan May and Mac Nolde were turned back by high winds at Ingraham Flats (11,200') this morning.  They returned to Camp Muir around 3 am.  The teams will start their descent from Camp Muir around 9am.

RMI guide Dustin Wittmier and his team reached the summit of Mt Shuksan on August 18th via the Sulphide Glacier.

Congratulations to the Four Day Climb team, led by RMI Guides Stella Johnson and Dustin Wittmier, on reaching the 14,410-foot summit of Mt. Rainier early this morning!

Despite cold temperatures and strong winds, the team was rewarded with clear skies above the cloud layer surrounding Paradise. They are currently descending and expect to arrive back at Camp Muir shortly.

Today was a big one, all the way from 12,600 to 15,200.  Breaking a number of records in the process. 

We set out from Shira at 8 AM up gently rising slopes. We marched through Juniper shrubs and sage-like plants until the plants were finished near 15K.  Our high point for the day -Lava Tower- was the perfect place to take an extended lunch break. Then it was down two thousand feet, back to where the plants thrive in the Barranco Valley. We cruised through Lobelias and Senecios endemic to Kilimanjaro.  All told it was about seven hours on the trail for our gang today with 6 of the 10 climbers having shattered their previous high-altitude records.

As promised, we got to work today, packing and prepping for Mount Kilimanjaro.  After a great breakfast at Rivertrees Inn, sitting outside under cloudy skies, our team of 12 got to know each other a little while we discussed the climb and how to get ready for it.  Next came a gear check to ensure that climbers weren’t bringing either too much or too little on our week-long expedition.  Folks then used the afternoon to get packs and duffels ready. 

We enjoyed a great dinner together, received the last missing bits of luggage from the airlines and then turned in, ready to get on the bus tomorrow and get walking.

Shira Plateau, 12,600 ft.  After a calm night at 10,000 ft, we woke to see Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s central peak, shining in the clear morning air.  Below, there was still a sea of clouds but that wasn’t bothering us.  We got walking uphill at 8 AM and started climbing up a giant stairmaster of rock through a short forest of Heather.  Before long we’d crested a ridge which we then followed in toward Kibo.  Finally, we made a turn to the west, putting our hands on rock to get up some blocky sections.  We turned a last corner and found ourselves on the Shira Plateau and we strolled into our new camp a few minutes later.  It was then an easy afternoon of resting, eating and playing games.  The team is primed to watch the sun set out beyond Mt Meru, the 15,000 ft volcano on our western horizon.

What a day! What a mountain!  What a team!  It all came together today, perfect weather and the entire team ready to take advantage of it.  We got 100% of the team to the summit.  We got walking from Barafu camp at midnight and climbed through the cold and dark for what seemed like forever.  It was a full moon night and dead calm… but it was still quite cold.  The sun rose close to 6:30 as we were just below the crater rim. By 7:52 we were at Uhuru… the true summit and the highest point in Africa.  Basically, we then spent the rest of the day climbing down.  The journey from 19,341' ft to 10,000' ft was broken up with a wonderful brunch back at our 15,200 ft high camp.  The team made it down to Mweka Camp at the respectable hour of 4:30, just in time for tea and then a last dinner on the mountain.

The RMI team on Mt Shuksan reached the summit via the Fisher Chimneys. They are on their descent back to the trailhead today.
