Mark Tucker here calling from Island Peak Basecamp. Had a wonderful stay at the resort in Chukung. Great evening, kind fellowship with other climbers from around the world. The hike up here took about 3 hours, and did very well and greeted by a staff that we've had in place. They've been here for few days, great dining and kitchen area, wonderful food, tents already set up. What a lap of luxury we walked right into. We did a couple hikes today to keep the blood flowing. The team is doing very well. Planning tomorrow to finalize details, get some gear sorted, and then we're gonna ship up to High Camp and get ourselves ready for the summit push tomorrow in the late evening. So the deal is on, we're doing great, and we'll talk to you later. RMI Guide Mark Tucker

Everest Base Camp Trek & Island Peak Climb: Tucker Calls in from Chukung

Mark Tucker here outside of our resort in Chukung. Rallying for our next wave of the program, the Island Peak climb. Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse. Wow! What a view. Let's call it Phase 1 is in the books and what a trip so far. The Island Peak team, we bid farewell to the trek group this morning, under yep, once again, beautiful blue skies. As a guide, you try your hardest to be the conduit between the mountain and the folks with a bit less experience usually. And it thrills me every time to see groups like these accept this new kind of challenge. Rainier Mountaineering does such a great job preparing its guides. They provide us with the training and support for the staff. The incredible institutional knowledge is passed down literally generations of professional guiding. It's just, it is the best there is out there and I'm so proud to be part of this great group of women and men. With that said, your training has led you to never take anything for granted, or let my guard down, in what can be in quite a hostile environment. There can be a surprise around any corner. And I just wanna send my congratulations to my trek team for a fantastic job they all did. Thanks for spending time with me out here in my office. And safe travels home to all you guys. And now, here come the climb team, and we are ready. Its [Island Peak] basecamp tomorrow, back into tent life. And I'm looking forward to it. RMI Guide Mark Tucker

Everest Base Camp Trek: Tucker & Team Head Down Valley to Pheriche

Lulled to sleep by rock and icefall, what a night at Everest Base Camp. A few comments that it was the best dinner since arriving in country. Short lived this time, we are already back in Pheriche gearing up for Island Peak. Should be deep sleep tonight here in the thick air of 14,000 ft. We'll bid farewell to the Trek team in the morning. As usual a whirlwind tour for the group. Lots of firsts for all. Once again the mountains provided fantastic views with perfect weather. Times like these are what bring you back to challenge the physical and mental. In time the photos will overshadow the tough conditions you are subjected to on trips like these. Maybe Hawaii next time, but I bet down the road another adventure of this type just can't be avoided. RMI Guide Mark Tucker

Everest Base Camp Trek: Tucker & Team Arrive in Base Camp!

Mark Tucker from Everest Base Camp. We hiked most of the day under fabulous conditions and arrived for lunch by our favorite cook, Kumar. Lots to see here at Base Camp, we did some exploring. Dinner went well, Kumar cooked us a cake. He can bake us a cake because he actually has a small oven up here. Very comfortable, I'm so spoiled. Pretty white on the ground at this point. Hopefully it's just an evening flurry and we'll wake up to some blue skies. We have a good hike tomorrow. We're going to head back down to Pheriche. That is our target for our hike. Everest Base Camp Trek: Tucker & Team Summit Kala Patar

What a day! Easy climb up to Gorak Shep where lunch and rooms were waiting for us. Took a nice break then it was Kala Patar. Perfect conditions up the 1,400 ft climb to the summit. We timed it to be on top at sunset and just a bit of descent in the dark with headlamps, what an adventure. A good physical challenge for the team but perfect technique and perseverance paid off. Can't tell you how many times I have done this climb, it never gets old, and is always a thrill. The view of Mount Everest does not get any better than from that vantage point, no wind and clear cannot be beat. For me to look up at the summit and think of all the time and effort I have spent over the years on that beast, brings me so much emotion it is hard to convey. The connection you make after you summit Mount Everest is a bond forever. I take pride in sharing what I have learned through my 15 expeditions over here with every team. I felt the mountain helping me, while also keeping tabs. Base Camp tomorrow. RMI Guide Mark Tucker

Thank you for telling about your climb to the summit of Kala Patar…it sounds like something I would like to summit for the awesome view of Mt. Everest. I’m adding it to my list of things to do when I do my EBC trek…as long as it’s not a technical climb.

Mark Tucker calling from Lobuche. I'm leaning up against the window to try and get some reception. Can you believe it? We have no wifi, I so apologize. The team is doing well, we're bunking down. We're going to push up to Gorak Shep tomorrow. Had a great hike from Pheriche today. Boy we have really starting to feel like we are up, up, up. So, thin, thin air and getting thinner. Tomorrow marks the 65K endurance race coming from Gorak Shep. And so we are going to root some of these folks on that we've been parallel over the course of our trip. We'll be glad to see them, but I am not too jealous of them running from Gorak Shep to Lukla in a matter of hours. I kinda like what we are doing, so we'll check in again later. Everest Base Camp Trek: Tucker & Team Train in Pheriche

Rest days are done. We are now in the position to go for our summit. Base Camp being our goal. I feel good with the team's condition at this time. Big push up to Lobuche tomorrow, a couple thousand feet at this altitude will surely be felt by all. We are ready, bring it on. Made some head way with climbing equipment adjustments and technical training for the Island Peak crew. Any old bench around the tea house can provide a great anchor and the door to the dining room being less than a pitch away isn't all bad. Had a wonderful reunion with one of the finest Mountain Guides in the world, Casey Grom who overlaps his trip with ours for the night. Casey is such a talent in all aspects of climbing but what a challenge for him at a game of cribbage. So fun to hangout and nice to hash over logistics, since he will be climbing Island Peak a few days after us. A light dusting of snow this afternoon but clear tonight. RMI Guide Mark Tucker

Everest Base Camp Trek: Tucker & Team in Pheriche

Hello from Pheriche! 14,042 feet but who's counting. After a nice dinner, the team is tucked away for the night. Lot's of hiking in all directions today. Nice to have such great Sherpa support to be able to offer many options. A few new altitude records for the team. Another day of perfect weather, and trail conditions in great shape. We are now above tree line, but lots of bushes still keep us thinking we are where life forms can survive. It is a rather tough environment to be in, we welcome these islands of paradise called tea houses. Plan is to take a rest day here tomorrow. Some day hikes and a bit of training for my crew that will go with me to Island Peak in the not so distant future. The surrounding peaks of Taboche (21,309') and Cholatse (20,784') always impress. Crazy to think that the real big ones are up this valley and around the corner. Looking so forward to reuniting with those views. RMI Guide Mark Tucker

Everest Base Camp Trek: Tucker Checks in from the Tea House under a Bright Moon

Hello Mark Tucker checking in from high in the Himalaya. I am outside of our tea house and it is quite the bright moon. Had some clouds roll in later in the day... It's pretty windy. Had great views of Everest and Nuptse. We are all tucked in with the hot water bottles and looking forward to a good night's rest. Part of the team made a little side venture over to get blessed by one of the holy Lamas of the valley. And they had an awesome time. So we are feeling very fortunate that he was available for that. L & P- Yea For making it to Pheriche!! Its interesting that Mark writes of the moon - iwe have seen the moon for the past 3 nights and tonight, also. When you look at the moon, know that we are too and are with you….Go!!! Grab it all! D’s quote this evening was, “those kids are so lucky! They are doing something that the rest of us just dream of…!!” Live the dream, Guys.

Everest Base Camp Trek: Tucker & Team Trek to Deboche

We had a wonderful climb today. As we left Namche Bazaar and headed up the trai,l the summit of Mt. Everest came into view. It would not be a good day to make a summit attempt as the plume blowing off the summit reached out for a mile or so and is an indicator that winds on the summit are likely in the 100 mph range. But it sure does make for a nice photo. We stopped for lunch by the river and then, with full bellies, headed up the infamous Tengboche Hill. The team did a great job and in a couple of hours we reached the Tengboche Monastery and were greeted by one of the elder monks. After our visit, we made a quick descent to the fairy tail land of Deboche where we will spend the night. The team is doing well, a few minor physical discomforts, but to be expected. The tea house staff is firing up the dining room stove with dried Yak dung, hey what ever provides a bit of heat, bring it on. RMI Guide Mark Tucker
