RMI Guides Jess Wedel and Joe Crawford led their teams to the summit of Mt. Rainier this morning, reaching the crater rim just after 7 am.  Jess said it was a perfect day on the mountain with a slight breeze.  Once they enjoy a bit of time on the summit, they will descend to Camp Muir, take a short break and then continue down to Paradise.  Their program will conclude this afternoon at Rainier BaseCamp.

Sam and team have been able to Fly onto the Glacier. earlier today. Keep an eye out for posts fromt the Ruth Glacier! 

Today was another rainy and overcast day in Talkeetna. After another great breakfast, we shifted our focus to skills at the K2 Aviation hangar. We covered friction hitches, anchor construction and sled rigging before we sat down for a round table discussion on weather and mapping! Tomorrow, we wait and cross our fingers for the skies to clear and the opportunity to fly!

The Five-Day climbs led by Jackson Breen and Will Ambler summitted Mt. Rainier around 7:10 am this morning. They reported clear skies above with clouds building around them, so they opted for a touch and go on top to keep the team moving. They'll return to Camp Muir and stay one more night before returning to Ashford.

RMI Guides Jess Wedel, Dylan Anderson, and Stella Johnson led their team to an early morning summit of Glacier Peak today. After descending back to high camp, the team took some time to rest before packing up and continuing down to their lower camp, where they will spend the night. Tomorrow morning, they'll complete the final leg of their journey with the descent to the trailhead.

Congratulations to the entire team on a successful summit!

The Four-Day climb led by RMI guide Nikki Champion enjoyed the summit of Mt Rainier this morning. They reported clear conditions and decreasing winds. They were leaving the crater at 7:22am and are on their descent back to Camp Muir. They will return to Ashford later this afternoon.

RMI Guides Mike King and Avery Stolte and the Five Day Climb Teams reached the summit of Mt. Rainier at 7:50am this morning. Mike reported a chilly morning with light winds. Both teams are on their descent back to Camp Muir and will head back to Paradise tomorrow.

The Four-Day Climbs led by RMI Guides Dave Hahn and Joe Crawford turned around at 11,500 feet this morning due to route conditions. The teams safely returned to Camp Muir and plan to begin their descent to Paradise at 9:00 a.m.

Sunday, June 21 - 6:45PM PST

We didn’t get up in the middle of the night!  It was wonderful to sleep until the civilized hour of six AM. Being higher up the hill at 11k means we don’t have to work so hard to avoid heat. We set off on our “back-carry” at 8 AM, snowshoeing down the hill to our cache at 10k. We collected our food and fuel and made it back into 11camp by 10:30.  The team sheltered from the sun until 3 and then we assembled to review crampon footwork and handling an ice axe, both of which will be useful tomorrow as we transition to steeper terrain. It began to snow -gently- as we finished training and set about packing for tomorrow’s carry.

5/24 - Our team woke up to beautiful views back down heartbreak hill which we had conquered the day before and cloudy skies up the mountain towards which we set our sights. Breakfast consisted of granola and powdered milk and as much hot coffee as we could get down before rigging our sleds and packs.

With lighter loads than day 1 we slowly made our way up ski hill, eventually reaching our cache site around 9800'. Our guides dug a large 6-foot hole and we piled in bags filled with our extra clothes, gear, and food that we will grab in a couple days for the higher mountain. The cache was then topped with the extra snow and plenty of bamboo pole flags to mark it and we headed back down with empty sleds and lighter packs. 

Cloudy skies when we arrived back at camp broke and we again had some sun. A couple of us started charging our batteries with solar panels we brought and we relaxed, snacked, and dried our gear in the greenhouses of our tents.

We just finished a delicious early dinner of hearty pan fried burritos and cookies. Tomorrow we will cache some of our extra food and used clean mountain cans (CMCs) which we’ve taken turns using after meals here at 8k feet and make our way to 11k camp.

Denali continues to loom large across our camp above us, occasionally peeking out to show off its raw majesty. While we usually can’t make out the top above the clouds, we continue to set our sights there as we make our way closer and closer, day by day.

P.S. Hello to all our friends, family, and coworkers following our progress!

The four-day climbing teams, led by Nikki Champion and Mike Bennett, reached the crater rim just before 7:20 a.m. this morning. After a brief touch-and-go at the summit, the team reported clear skies and a windy ascent.

The teams are now descending to Camp Muir, where they will reset, pack their gear, and continue down to the trailhead. They are expected to return to Ashford later this afternoon, concluding a successful four-day climb.
