RMI team led by Ray Holt successfully summitted Mt. Baker on their July 7–9 climb. With favorable conditions and strong teamwork throughout the trip, the team achieved a 100% summit success rate, with every climber reaching the top.

Greetings!

We had a successful day caching at 10000’ and getting ready to move to 11 camp tomorrow. The guides have taken to the Zeppathon, listening to all of Led Zeppelin’s albums and discussing their favorites. Led Zeppelin IV seems to be a favorite. The climbers are doing great and had so much fun helping their guides dig the cache (they offered). Conversations amongst the clients have ranged from ‘how many siblings do you have’ to ‘what is your spirit vegetable?’ One of the our climbers noted what great posture one of our female guides on the trip has. Spirits are high and the sun is hot. Dinner tonight is burritos with more discussions of getting to know each other. The topic tonight is biggest regrets in life.

The Expedition Skills Seminar - Paradise August 20 - 25 led by RMI Guide Sam Hoffman concluded their week of training and climbing with a summit climb of Mt. Rainier.  The team enjoyed a bluebird day and reached the summit around 6 am, enjoying the views before starting their descent from the crater rim around 7 am.  The team will get a short break at Camp Muir to repack their gear before they continue the final 4,500' to Paradise later this afternoon.  They will celebratie their successes at Rainier BaseCamp this afternoon. 

8/1: Just wanted to give you a quick update about our trip to Baker. 

All went smooth. Weather was great for the climbing days. Bad weather came in as we where hiking out. All clients reached the summit in good style. 

The climb was fun and the ridge is in good condition still. Creavases are starting to open a bit, but still manageable and safe. We had a great time.

We woke up with a little pep in our step after a good night’s rest at lower altitudes.

Today was our shortest day on the trail, and it came at exactly the right time after two big days and more ahead. After a leisurely breakfast — oat bread (a crowd favorite), quinoa porridge, breakfast sandwiches, and as much hot cocoa and coffee as we could physically put down — we hit the trail.

Descending for a couple hours, we took our time and stopped to learn about the plants, herbs, and flowers along the way. We stopped by the river and sat in silence for some minutes, everyone on their own rock, listening to what Edgar called “the music of Pachamama.” Peaceful, and a good reminder that you can do this anywhere, just sit and listen to birds and moving water, you don’t need to be at 12,000 feet in Peru to remember that. Though it helps.

We visited our first archaeological site on trail, then said goodbye to our horses and wranglers. From here on, we’re on the official Inca Trail, porter team and all.

The afternoon was ours. Rest, laundry, lying in the sun. A campsite chess match. Meanwhile the local chickens and roosters strutted through camp like they owned the place (they might.)

Well-earned, all of it, before tomorrow’s big climb up to Dead Woman’s Pass.

Everyone is doing well. Chess champions, laundry doers, chicken diplomats, the whole crew.

We are out and off Shuksan. We left early due to lots of rain. No summit due to weather.

Hannah, Daniel, and I sunset climbed on baker this evening. Back at camp. We will be walking out tomorrow and enjoying the blueberries.

All is well up here! Turned at 8100’ and we had a great day of skiing the Roosevelt Glacier instead! Great temps and good skiing concluded the day.

Yesterday, July 31st, RMI guide Avery Stolte and her team summitted Mt Shuksan via the Fisher Chimneys. They descended back to the trailhead today.
