Mt. Rainier: Five Day Climb Teams Unable to Reach Summit

The Five Day Climb June 3 - 7, 2021 is completing their climb today.  The teams did training at Paradise on Friday with instruction on cramponing, rope travel and ice axe arrest.  On Saturday they made the ascent from Paradise to Camp Muir.  Yesterday, they enjoyed some additional time walking in crampons and working as a rope team by walking to Ingraham Flats at 11,200'.  This allowed them to see abit of the route in the day light hours.  They planned their summit attempt for today but unfortuaty the team was unable to make a summit attempt due to high winds.  According to the Camp Muir Telemetry wind averages were 34 - 53 mph with gusts up to 68 mph.

The teams will descend from Camp Muir to Paradise and make the drive back to Ashford. We look forward to seeing them at Rainier BaseCamp later today.

Mt. Rainier: June 5th Team Turns Due to Poor Visibility

The Four Day Climb led by RMI Guides JM Gorum and Dominic Cifelli turned at 13,100' on Mt. Rainier this morning. Low visibility, moderate precipitation, and wind prevented the team from climbing above 13,100' feet. JM Gorum radioed the RMI Office to let us know that the team is currently descending and will be back to Camp Muir soon.

Congratulations to Today's team!

The team will return to Camp Muir and then continue down to Paradise later this afternoon.

Mt. Rainier: Four Day Climbs Turned Due to Wind Slabs

The Four Day Climb May 27 - 30 led by RMI Guides Andy Bond and Alan Davis reported pockets of wind slabs on the steeper portions of the route which forced the teams to turn around at 12,800’.  They enjoyed a spectacular sunrise with great views as they descended to Camp Muir.

Mt. Rainier: May 29th Team Reaches Ingraham Flats

The Four Day Climb led by RMI Guide JT Schmitt turned just above Ingraham Flats today. The team had clear skies for climbing, but significant wind loading on the upper slopes made it unsafe to travel on the upper mountian. The team has started their descent and will be back to Paradise early this afternoon.

Congratulations to Today's Team!

Safe is the way to go. So many aspects to think about when in the mountains.

Mt. Rainier: Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir Makes Summit Attempt

After getting delayed by the rain we were able to make a dry push to Camp Muir yesterday. The stars looked to be aligning for a great summit day. We left the ridge at Camp Muir looking back at the lunar eclipse, psyched to be walking on the Cowlitz Glacier on a warm windless night. The team worked their way up the route feeling the altitide but also feeling determined to reach the top of Mt. Rainier. At 13,000' however, the mountain spoke to us telling us today, in fact, was not our day. Snow instability prevented us from climbing higher. We did not get the perfect day we were hoping for but we still got a gorgeous morning with beautiful views.
