Cayambe Express: Grom & Team Prepare for Summit Attempt

Hello everyone. All is well here in Ecuador. The team got a decent night of sleep here on Cayambe at 15,000'. We got up at 6 am and had a nice breakfast before hiking up to the start of the glacier. We took our time on the hike and enjoyed the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. It was pretty windy this morning so we kept things brief on our review of glacier travel, then made our way back to the hut for a nice lunch. Currently the team is taking naps or resting outside in the always warming Ecuadorian sun. Our plan is to have an early dinner tonight and try to get a little more shut-eye before our alpine start. We'll most likely get up at 11pm, have a quick breakfast and coffee, then start climbing around midnight to make use of the cooler temps. If all goes according to plan we hope to summit around 7 am give or take a few. As per usual, I'm going to have a mountain trivia challenge where one lucky winner will receive a summit phone call from the Satellite phone. So everyone back home keep your phones nearby, you might be receiving a call from a strange number. Wish us luck! RMI Guide Casey Grom and the Cayambe crew

Mt. Rainier: Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir Makes Summit Attempt

The Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir led by RMI Guides Andy Bond and Mike King made their summit attempt today. After spending several days training at Camp Muir, the Seminar Team left Camp Muir en route to the summit. The recent storm left several feet of snow in places. The guides broke trail and continually assessed the route and weather conditions. After reaching 12,600' the team decided to turn around and head back Camp Muir due to deteriorating weather. They will spend their last night at Camp Muir. Tomorrow, they will complete their program and return to Rainier BaseCamp in Ashford.

How can we track our kids while they’re climbing MT Rainier? Our 2 daughters - Shauna and Kerry Manion are with John Marquart and Tiffany Marquart as part of a group of 12 people guided with Sherpa’s. They told us there was a link to follow them on the trip. They arrived on 9/21 but I think they were in training today and starting the climb tomorrow on 9/23. Can you give me any information? Are they on one of your expeditions?

Kilimanjaro: Okita & Team Meet in Arusha, Tanzania

July 18, 2017 Most of the team flew in last night, weathering the long flights and time changes admirably. Our hotel, the Arumera River Lodge here in Arusha, Tanzania, is great. They held the restaurant open for us so we could have dinner and decompress from our travels some. This is unlike any hotel I've stayed at. Africa at it's best, with the diminutive antelope called the Dikdik and Blue monkeys running around the grounds filled with tropical trees and vegetation and insects I've never seen before. Kansas it ain't! The drive in from the airport earlier was a forty five minute exercise in restraint as I tried to concentrate on my conversation with the manager of our outfitting company here for Kilimanjaro, while still watching the people and goings on around me. Bikes piled high with crops from the fields, women in beautifully colored saris and everything else that makes Tanzania such a wonderful place to visit. I must confess, this is not my normal expedition. This is a family affair triggered by my sister in laws big birthday and my brother's pulling the strings to make it all happen. Plus, my wife is part of the team too. Thanks Brad! Ahead of us is breaks, our official team meeting and orientation and subsequent equipment check readying us to begin our climb tomorrow of one of the 'Seven Summits,' family style. Now if I can just get over my jet lag. RMI Guide Brent Okita

Alpamayo: Schellens & Team Rest at High Camp

After a restless night of sleep at our high camp, 17,900ft, we got up late had breakfast and coffee and began our day of chilling. Everyone is adjusting well to the new altitude, some minor headaches this morning but once we were up and moving around a little the symptoms abated. After soup for lunch some folks caught a quick nap before we started packing and prepping for our summit bid tonight. We are all excited for our chance to start climbing this beautiful face we have been looking at all day. That's all for now. We'll check in again after we get back from our climb tomorrow. Thanks for following along, RMI Guide Geoff Schellens

Alpamayo: Elias & Team Carry to Camp 1

Good evening from Alpamayo Base Camp. We had a productive day today, carrying a load to Camp 1 at 4900meters. We set a tent up and deposited half our kit. After that, we remained up there for a while, breathing the thin air and letting the body and lungs get a taste of what's coming up. Some clouds and a drop in temps let us know it was time to head back down to base camp, and a light drizzle materialized around dinner time. Tomorrow we're going to take a rest day here at base, as we are getting excited to get moving up higher soon. That's all for now, RMI Guide Elías de Andres Martos and team

Ecuador: Nugent & Team Ascend Fuya Fuya and travel to Otavalo

Chillin' at Casa del Sol... Well, we enjoyed another great day down here in Ecuador with a nice hike, good weather and good company. After meeting our local alpine guide David and an early departure from Quito we made our way to the north towards our acclimatization objective Cerro Fuya Fuya, but also Otavalo, and most notably Cayambe. While the clouds prevented us from peeping Cayambe while on Fuya Fuya, we were still able to enjoy views from the summit of the surrounding volcanic caldera and the large lake below. The whole team moved well and enjoyed the day out and about. We're now posted up at a beautiful guesthouse up above the city of Otavalo called Casa del Sol, enjoying a beer and waiting for dinner. Tomorrow, however, the real adventure begins as we make our way up towards Cayambe... More to come! RMI Guide Billy Nugent

Everest Base Camp Trek and Lobuche: Wedel & Team see Himalayan Tahr and Visit Tengboche Monastery

What a day! What a day!

We seem to have settled into the trail life, finally leaving the jet lag and nerves surrounding what to expect on the trip behind and walking with ease.

We climbed to the top of Namche this morning and traversed along a winding trail. Patchy clouds stuck around from a little snow last night but we still had some beautiful mountain views.

Nawang, one of our Sherpa guides, spotted two Himalayan tahr - a type of mountain goat - below the trail today. What a lucky sight! We all would have walked right past them even though we were keeping our eyes out.

The clouds got more dense as we left our lunch break for the big hill climb to Tengboche. Soon after, it started snowing. It was a peaceful and quiet snow and we mostly climbed in silence just taking it all in.

We made it to the top of the hill and the ancient Tengboche monastery. It was so special to be there and spend some time learning about the sacred site.

Soon we found ourselves descending to Rivendell — our teahouse for the night. While the snow continued outside, we stayed cozy in the dining room playing Farkle and Bananagrams! Some of us kept track of our score on our phones and some of us *cough cough David* kept track using almonds and pistachios. I guess the almond method worked because he beat us all.

The snow continues outside our windows but we’re all tucked in under sleeping bags and ample warm blankets.

Sweet dreams from the Himalayas!

RMI Guide Jess Wedel and the Lobuche team
