Alpamayo: Schellens & Team Rest at High Camp

After a restless night of sleep at our high camp, 17,900ft, we got up late had breakfast and coffee and began our day of chilling. Everyone is adjusting well to the new altitude, some minor headaches this morning but once we were up and moving around a little the symptoms abated. After soup for lunch some folks caught a quick nap before we started packing and prepping for our summit bid tonight. We are all excited for our chance to start climbing this beautiful face we have been looking at all day. That's all for now. We'll check in again after we get back from our climb tomorrow. Thanks for following along, RMI Guide Geoff Schellens

Mt. McKinley Expedition: Cifelli & Team Retrieve Gear from 10,000ft

June 15, 2025 - 8:38 pm PT

Gooooood evening Denali blog followers and welcome back to your personal tell all of mountain news, gossip, and glory. Today, just like the itsy bitsy spider we climbed that spout again. We were gently awoken by our guides at  5:30 and left for a 6:45 start back down the mountain to our cache below. At 10,000 feet we… and by we I mean our relentless guides…  dug out our cache filled with snacks, solar panels, clean clothes, and summit gear. And thank god I was reunited with my cheese. ‘Twas a short jaunt back up to 11,000' Camp where we enjoyed bagels with bacon and honey jalapeño cream cheese. Contrary to yesterday’s blog, the American Canadian peace balance now falls in the hands of the Oilers and Panthers.

We then got a quick refresher course on how moving up the rest of the mountain will go as we ditch our snow shoes and move into crampons. A few of us gathered in a big circle and traded cheeses of all kinds until we made certain none of us would ever poop again.

Tomorrow we await to see what the weather brings in hope of moving more gear up to the next cache.

I continue to think about and question why a person takes on an effort such as this. Perhaps there’s answers we think the mountain holds, perhaps a bottomless pit of an ego we are trying to fill, the need for contrast from our everyday lives, or maybe it’s just the love of mountains and pushing ourselves to the jagged edge of our capabilities. No matter the reason, it’s an honor to be here with such talented and kind human beings. Sitting here at 11,000 ft our team has no idea what the future holds, to that I raise a toast to my fellow climbers at all stages on Denali… To the mountains we are meant to summit, and the ones we are not, may we enjoy the company, the views, and the climb either way.

I want to say thank you to my parents, I wouldn’t be here without you, and a special shout out to Moose Hockey Alaska, and the 525 bulldogs, YBYSA!

Love,

RMI Climber Mikayla

Here’s a shout out to the team… You all got this.  And here’s a special shout out to Mikayla DeMers AKA my sweet, bad-ass, airplane fixing, jeep driving, mountaining climbing, hockey pucking, doggie-wrestling, airplane flying, extra cheese eating daughter!  That’s almost scratching the surface.  So now it is time for Papa’s inspirational sayings!  Mikayla, remember that you eat an
elephant (Mt McKinley) one-bite at a time… It’s no hill for a climber… slower is faster… slow and steady wins the race (the climb)... you are blooming where you are planted… and no matter what, know that you’ve pushed yourself to new heights.  New heights that only a fraction of a percent of people will ever get see.  Remember, although you may have weather delays, that slower is faster and it will give you time to adjust to the altitude.
I love you bunches… think warm thoughts!  Cyber hugs are flying your way at the speed of light!

My husband Luis, returned yesterday in 1 piece. After hearing all the stories, I couldn’t be more proud to be called his wife.
His physical strength, mental strength, spiritual strength & all the team effort is what helped him reach the top.
Congratulations to the team.
Thank you, Pete, Chad & Jessy for providing this experience, but I don’t think you see me anytime soon.

Mt. Elbrus: Grom & Team Enjoy Another Beautiful Day

Hello again everyone. The weather continues to be beautiful here on Mt. Elbrus for us. We started the day with a nice breakfast and then set out on our last acclimatizing hike just before 9:00. The team did a great job as we made our way up to a little over 15,300', setting a new record for some and it took us only about three hours. We stopped along the way to take a few breaks and enjoy the view as well as chat with the other climbers that are from all over the world. After reaching our high point we made our way back to camp just in time for another enjoyable lunch. Since then it's been nap time for some or just relaxing in our little huts as there was a small snow squall that blew through this afternoon. Everyone is doing well and in good spirits. Alpamayo: Schellens & Team Cache at Moraine Camp

Good evening, the Alpamayo teams had a great day today starting with coffee in our tents and then an outstanding breakfast of eggs toast and oat meal. We then casually packed up some gear to carry up to Moraine Camp and began hiking just after 10am. The light breeze kept the hike comfortable as the team made good time to 16,000' where we cached our climbing gear and supplies for our climb. We relaxed here for a bit and soaked in the amazing views of the Cordillera Blanca before descending back to BC. We were greeted back in camp by tea, soup and a great lunch followed by a siesta. Then this evening we ate another incredible dinner of soup, potatoes and chicken and a beautifully presented cake. Our cook, Hilario, is truly a master in his element. After our three-course meal we relaxed and watched a movie on the iPad before retiring to our tents for bed. Everyone is doing very well and spirits are high. Tomorrow we take a well deserved rest day after three days of solid effort. That's all for now. RMI Guide Geoff Schellens

Peru Seminar: Young & Team Begin Acclimatization and Get Ready for the Mountains

Hello! Greetings from Hotel Andino in the beautiful Huaraz City, Peru. Our expedition prep got off to a stunning start with a picturesque trip up to Puca Ventana (Red Window) at 11,600'. The additional elevation and light exercise will be crucial as we prep to move up the Ishinca Valley at 14,400' tomorrow morning. A casual lunch at the climbing hangout Cafe Andino kept us energized through the afternoon as we began the packing and gear sorting for our upcoming week in the Cordillera. Tonight we enjoy the comforts of civilization at our hotel for one last night. Our next dispatches will be from the high valleys as we move closer to our first climbing goal of Ishinca (18,143'). Stay tuned, friends! Buenas Noches, RMI Guides Robby Young, Eric Frank, Edwin, and the ESS-Peru Team

Mt. Rainier: Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir Makes Summit Attempt

The Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir led by RMI Guides Andy Bond and Mike King made their summit attempt today. After spending several days training at Camp Muir, the Seminar Team left Camp Muir en route to the summit. The recent storm left several feet of snow in places. The guides broke trail and continually assessed the route and weather conditions. After reaching 12,600' the team decided to turn around and head back Camp Muir due to deteriorating weather. They will spend their last night at Camp Muir. Tomorrow, they will complete their program and return to Rainier BaseCamp in Ashford.

How can we track our kids while they’re climbing MT Rainier? Our 2 daughters - Shauna and Kerry Manion are with John Marquart and Tiffany Marquart as part of a group of 12 people guided with Sherpa’s. They told us there was a link to follow them on the trip. They arrived on 9/21 but I think they were in training today and starting the climb tomorrow on 9/23. Can you give me any information? Are they on one of your expeditions?
