Ecuador Volcanoes: Grom & Team Enjoy Rest Day

Tuesday, November 11, 2025 - 5:50 pm PT

Greetings from Ecuador.

Today was a scheduled rest day and that’s exactly what everyone did!

We are staying in an incredibly beautiful and comfortable Hacienda just a stones throw from Cotopaxi with stunning views of the mountain right out the window.

The team ate well, read books, napped, and just generally lounged around to recharge after our challenging time on Cayambe. We’ve had some great conversations about life, shared cooking tips and some exciting and funny stories about being in the mountains.

Everyone is in good spirits and looking forward to one more night of good sleep before heading to our final climb tomorrow.

RMI Guides Casey, Jackson and the 6 amigos.

Smith & Team Sort Gear and Prepare for the Trek In to Aconcagua Base Camp

We left the comforts of Mendoza following the windy Mendoza River to Penitentes. The landscape is red, rocky, Martian looking land with bright green trees here and there. Before we arrive we make a mandatory empanada stop so we have the energy to get down to business when we arrive. It's a sea of duffels and gear as we sort through our belongings making a pile that will go straight to basecamp and one that will follow us up the valley on the mules. Excitement is growing bigger as we finish packing. Tomorrow we hit the trail. As for tonight we will enjoy a delicious dinner and our last night sleeping in beds. Talk to you all next on the trail, RMI Guide Hannah Smith and team

Vinson Massif: Hahn & Team Another Day at Union Glacier Camp

There was some reason for optimism today. Even though we woke to the same old clouds with light snowfall, the forecasters called for clearing... which is what we got. But that took a good chunk of the day, and ultimately the weather turned out to be not up to snuff at the other end. So we saw sun and felt a little warmth and finally got a great view of the jagged mountains all around us, but Vinson Basecamp ended up in fog. That is a dealbreaker when you aim to fly over in a Twin Otter on skis in order to land uphill on a valley glacier at 7,000 feet. We passed the day playing games and reading, some attended a history lecture dealing with the 1897 Belgian Expedition -the members of that trip had a few significant weather delays as well. We each went outside from time to time in order to stretch, walk and ride bikes around camp. Dinner was still quite pleasant, even as we had to give up on this particular day for starting our climb. Best Regards, RMI Guide Dave Hahn

Mt. Rainier: Paradise Seminar On Top!

The Expedition Skills Seminar - Paradise, led by RMI Guide Andy Bond, was on the Mt. Rainier summit just before 7:00 a.m. They are enjoying the Cascades Mountain views above a sea of clouds. The team has been on the mountain since Monday learning many mountaineering skills to prepare for bigger mountain objectives, such as Denali in Alaska. We look forward to hearing about their week of adventure this afternoon.

Mexico’s Volcanoes: Frank & Team Summit Ixtaccihuatl!

Good morning everyone, this is Eric Frank and the Mexico's Volcanoes Expedition checking in from the summit of Ixta. It's 7:30 a.m., local time here. We had a wonderful climb this morning after a little bit of rain a little bit of snow and some passing thunder storms last night, we actually woke up to starry skies and beautiful blue sky above us at this point with just a few cloud lingering down below. So we're going to hang out here and enjoy the sunshine and spend some time on top. Then we will get headed back down and move to Puebla for our rest day tomorrow, that is very well deserved. Thanks for following along. Talk to you soon. RMI Guide Eric Frank

Aconcagua: Gately & Team Start Trek and Arrive at Las Lénas

The team enjoyed one last breakfast in civilization this morning before stepping outside to blue skies and calm winds. The walk to our first camp, Las Lénas, in the Vacas Valley went perfectly. The valley can often times be extremely hot when there is no wind or extremely frustrating if there is a lot and we were gifted with the perfect amount to keep us cool and enjoy the trek. The team did great on their first day of trekking and enjoyed getting into the high country and working up an appetite for our carne asado tonight. The asados in the Vacas Valley our one of my favorite parts of the trip. The Arriaros make a fire and cook large cuts of beef and whole vegetables over an open fire. Everyone sits around the fire and is served family style. It's a wonderful bit of Argentinian mountain culture and a true highlight of the trip. Tomorrow we will continue our journey up the Vacas to our second camp "Casa de Piedra" (11,000 ft) and we'll finally get our first view of Aconcagua! That's all for now, thanks for following! Denali Expedition: Upper West Rib Team Rest at 14K Camp

June 12, 2016 - 11:35 am PDT Good Evening, Today was a very productive rest day for the Upper West Rib team here at 14k camp. We slept in, had a slow breakfast of eggs and hash browns with lots of coffee and then relaxed. At around noon we started building snow walls to fortify our camp. The team was unstoppable! These guys worked for hours and even when I told them to take a break, they would be back at it 5 minutes later. We are planing to cache some food and file up on the Rib tomorrow, weather permitting. Thanks again for following along, RMI Guide Geoff Schellens and The UWR Team
